Fields

Tick Box

A box designed to mark off any sightings if you decide to print any of the document. A handy extra if you're visiting a heritage site. A big thank you to Ian Tiley for setting up a query/module to allow this feature.

Number

I've adopted a system for the various categories as a way of trying to keep a uniform listing. Although most of the entries, except Industrial Loco,  will carry this number, several items actual running number will be found in the 'other number' field. Preservation sites often change their identities where several previous numbers were once carried, to suit their needs, and trying to keep an exact record of this is impossible. For steam locomotives I have listed these with their final service identity. For example, any pre-grouping loco's that made it into the big four, will show their last running number. This pretty much applies to diesel/electric locomotives, where the last TOPS number is shown, for those that made it. All industrial locomotives are listed by their works number where applicable. This also includes Wickham trolleys and various other plant. I've decided to do this as running numbers are seldom carried and most people report sightings of these this way . Any reported running numbers will be found in the 'notes' field.

Powered stock, coaching stock & wagons are listed by their 'original' identity, where known, unless it is a significant conversion. Each vehicle of a multiple unit is listed separately with any set numbers found in 'old number.' Where the original number is not known and another identity is listed, such as ex MOD, this will be detailed in the 'notes' field.

Origin

This is quite straight forward really & shouldn't cause any problems. There are a few overseas items which I've had to abbreviate but should be easy enough to work out.

Class/Type

There should be sufficient detail to identify each item. Any abbreviations are generally those that are used throughout the industry. I do list certain wagons by other means such as 12t Mink A (goods van) 24t Dogfish (ballast hopper) etc. I don't like to assume, but if you're into wagons you'll probably know these.

Livery

This is a very short field so nothing exotic will be shown. K = Black, GR = Grey etc.

Build Details

Basically the builder and the date constructed, where known.

Notes

This is without doubt the most complex field in the document. It can include anything that has extra relevance to the record. All names are in here as well as any running numbers for Industrial locomotives. If there are no other notes the name will be the first thing in the field. If there is any previous detail the name will follow a hyphen. For example....2ft - Elider. There are many codes, some old ones which I'm trying to remember! Please check the 'abbreviations' link for details.

Other Numbers

Another straight forward field. As explained in the 'number' field if you can't find what you're looking for on your travels then check in here.
